Cascade Hernia & Surgical Solutions Remains at the Forefront of Research and Education
Connections with state university will offer opportunities for local students

The staff of Washington State University Medical School in Spokane has offered Dr. Robert Wright a clinical professorship, with the opportunity of funding further research assistance with statistics, as well as granting greater access for Washington State University medical students to observing surgery at the Puyallup clinic as part of their clinical rotations.

The connection between Dr. Wright and WSU was forged by relationships with two area medical students:

Recent published research by Dr. Wright was co-authored (among others) by a first-year medical student at Washington State University, Nina Thatch, who had assisted with research during the year between her graduation from Pacific Lutheran University and her admission year to WSU.  It turns out this is the first research paper published by a medical student from Washington State University!

Dr. Wright also recently operated on a patient from Enumclaw, whose son is also a student at Washington State University medical school and expressed interest in doing surgery and clinical research with Dr. Wright at Meridian Surgery Center.

All medical schools are commissioned to do both education of new medical students and also perform clinical research to advance the art and science of medicine.  Washington State University is now in its third year of admitting students and has not yet developed a strong foothold in the realm of research.

Dr. Wright was already working on three research papers this spring and has appreciated the assistance of Washington State University in pushing through with the submission of these papers this month.

For over 20 years, Doctor Wright at Meridian Surgery Center has self-funded clinical research to advance the field of surgery and has incorporated the manpower and energy of pre-med students as well as medical students in this effort. Patients should expect to see medical students observing the clinical practice of medicine at the office of Dr. Wright and Meridian Surgery Center in the upcoming months to continue, as we are very pleased to be able to provide this service to the state and excited to stimulate the minds of younger students on their way to becoming long-term clinicians.
