Alternative pain treatment shows promise
Cascade Hernia Institute at Meridian Surgery Center provides innovative approaches to surgical pain management for patients.
Earlier this month, the results of Dr. Wright’s recent pain management research were published by The American Journal of Surgery. Previously, Dr. Wright presented his findings at the American Hernia Assembly in Miami this March.
Dr. Wright and fellow researchers found that the use of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) units used during post-operative recovery from elective surgery can help to reduce the administered amount of narcotics, particularly narcotic refills.
Refills of narcotics after elective surgery are associated with increased risk of narcotic dependence and later addiction. TENS units are promising as an avenue to decrease this risk.
We have now incorporated TENS into our post-operative approach at Meridian Surgery Center.
