Cascade Hernia & Surgical Solutions Remains at the Forefront of Research and Education
Dr. Robert C. Wright from Cascade Hernia Institute has been invited by the Pacific Coast Surgical Association (PCSA) to present a podium speech on his breakthrough hernia research at the prestigious annual meeting in Carlsbad, CA this February 2020.
Dr. Wright, with Stanford neuropathologist Dr. Don Born and third-year WSU medical student Troy Saunders, will present research on the underlying causes of hernia pain and discuss the development of scarring in nerves caused by pressure and friction in hernia—a previously unstudied factor in solving the mystery of why hernias cause pain.
Dr. Wright’s, Dr. Born’s, and Sander’s research demonstrates that as time goes on, the pressure of a hernia damages nerves irreversibly, a condition called compression neuropathy. They collectively carried out a myelin staining research process to find that increased collagen in many nerves indicates irreversible scarring of the nerve. This research is, for the first time in medical history, demonstrating why a hernia is causing pain. The breakthroughs established in this study may lead to more research on reducing pain in hernia procedures and improving patient outcomes.
Troy is a 3rd-year medical student at WSU’s Elson S. Floyd School of Medicine and has aided Dr. Wright and Dr. Born in their groundbreaking hernia research. In addition to speaking at the PCSA conference, he has been asked to write a research paper for the Journal of the American Medical Association, as this research is highly valued by the academic medical community. Troy is originally from Enumclaw and is one of several medical students assisting Dr. Wright with ongoing research at Cascade Hernia Institute’s mentorship program. Troy is the 12th medical student to have research published under Dr. Wright’s mentorship.
Dr. Wright is committed to thought leadership in the hernia field and has published many papers, articles, and presentations on the subject. Dr. Wright is very pleased about his recent appointment to WSU’s medical school faculty and is excited to offer further mentorship to WSU medical students on their rotations at Meridian Surgery Center.
